Pendembu is a small town in Kailahun District in Sierra Leone's Eastern Province, set in the country's far east near the borders with Liberia and Guinea. The town was historically the terminus of the Sierra Leone Railway, which ran from 1908 between Freetown and Pendembu and made the town a strategic end-point for palm oil, cocoa, coffee, kola, and tropical timber from the Mende hinterland. With the closure of the railway in 1974 the town lost part of its economic weight but remained a central market and transport node. During the civil war Pendembu was a contested frontline town that changed hands repeatedly and suffered heavy damage. After 2002, Pendembu was rebuilt with the support of international donors. Today the town lives off cocoa, coffee, and rice farming, cross-border trade with Liberia and Guinea, and a growing number of schools, churches, mosques, and health centers. Pendembu is also an important hub for humanitarian organizations operating in the region.
