Boajibu is a small market town in Kenema District in Sierra Leone's Eastern Province, set in the northern Mende area about 60 kilometers north-west of Kenema. The town is the headquarters of Simbaru chiefdom and an important trading node between the cocoa and coffee belts of the area and the major cities of Kenema and Bo. In the 1960s and 1970s, Boajibu was a well-known center of the rural cooperative movement, in which Mende smallholders organized cocoa and coffee marketing through collective structures. During the civil war the town was contested several times, but schools, health centers, and administrative buildings were rebuilt after 2002. Today, Boajibu is home mainly to smallholder farmers, teachers, health workers, and traders. The weekly market draws buyers from Kenema and Tonkolili districts, and the unpaved tracks to Tongo, Mongheri, and Panguma make Boajibu a key node for the northern hinterland of the district.
