💡 Tips
- While Koidu is famous for diamonds, avoid restricted mining areas and do not attempt to buy gems on the street due to strict laws.
- Roads in the Kono District can be rough and muddy, especially in the rainy season; a sturdy 4x4 vehicle is highly recommended.
- Electricity and running water can be inconsistent in some areas, so keep power banks charged and always carry bottled water.
- Greeting locals politely is very important; a friendly 'How de body?' (How are you?) will always be well received.

Koidu, often called Koidu Town or, together with the adjacent settlement of Sefadu, Koidu-Sefadu, is the urban center of Kono District in the Eastern Province and the heartland of Sierra Leone's diamond industry. The town lies on the hilly upland near the eastern border with the Republic of Guinea and rose to prominence from the 1930s onward when British geologists discovered rich alluvial diamond deposits along the Bafi, Sewa, and Woa rivers. The diamond rush that exploded in the 1950s triggered a major migration and the appearance of numerous small mining settlements around Koidu, many of which were later absorbed into the town. Today, Koidu hosts Koidu Holdings, one of the country's most important industrial diamond mines, alongside many licensed and artisanal miners. The town has markets, banks, hospitals, and educational institutions, including a campus of the Eastern Polytechnic. Despite the heavy impact of the 1991-2002 civil war, in which Kono was a central conflict zone, Koidu has visibly rebuilt itself over the past two decades.
