Gola Forest North is an integral part of the Gola Rainforest National Park in eastern Sierra Leone and represents one of the most significant rainforest areas in all of West Africa. Established as a reserve in the 1920s and elevated to national park status in 2011, the northern sector spans a hilly landscape with dense, pristine primary forests. This area is of global ecological significance as it serves as a sanctuary for numerous endangered species, including the pygmy hippopotamus and Jentink's duiker. With over 300 recorded bird species, the Gola Forest is a paradise for ornithologists and hosts rare species such as the white-necked rockfowl. The forest is part of the Upper Guinean Forest ecosystem and plays a critical role in carbon storage and climate protection. Its transboundary location with the Lofa-Mano National Park in Liberia allows for an important wildlife corridor. Conservation measures today focus on the fight against illegal gold mining and poaching, as well as involving local communities through sustainable cocoa farming projects. Gola Forest North is on the UNESCO World Heritage tentative list and is a symbol of successful nature conservation in Sierra Leone.

Getting there
Typically accessed via rugged, unpaved dirt roads from nearby provincial towns, requiring a robust 4x4 vehicle to safely navigate. Entry usually necessitates arranging a visit through park headquarters or with recognized local community guides for orientation.
Best season
The dry season, running roughly from November to April, is the most practical time to navigate the roads and forest trails. During the intense wet months, access can become exceptionally difficult or impossible due to deep mud and widespread flooding.
Terrain & paths
This pristine area features dense, tangled undergrowth, muddy forest trails, and uneven ground crisscrossed by small streams. Hiking here is physically challenging and typically requires moving slowly through thick, humid vegetation on poorly defined paths.
What to bring
Waterproof hiking boots, long pants to protect against scratches, and high-quality insect repellent are strictly necessary for the jungle. A dry bag for electronics and plenty of purified drinking water should be carried at all times during your exploration.
Parking
Parking is usually restricted to designated ranger stations or local community bases located at the immediate forest edge. From these secure points, all further exploration into the dense reserve is conducted strictly on foot alongside local guides.
Safety
Navigating the dense forest without an experienced guide is highly perillous due to the significant risk of getting lost. Be acutely aware of tropical insects, snakes, and the general hazards associated with a remote, undisturbed rainforest environment.
Time needed
Visits usually range from a strenuous full-day hike to multi-day guided expeditions focusing on intensive wildlife spotting. Allow considerable extra travel time for the slow, difficult journey required just to reach the official park boundaries.
