Daru is a town in Kailahun District in Sierra Leone's Eastern Province, lying on the Moa River roughly halfway between Kenema and Kailahun. The town has hosted an important military garrison since British colonial times: Daru Barracks originally served the Frontier Police and later the Royal West African Frontier Force, and under independent Sierra Leone became part of the Republic of Sierra Leone Military Forces. During the civil war, Daru played a central role as a base for Nigerian-led ECOMOG troops and the Sierra Leone Army during operations against the RUF in the east of the country. Its economy rests on cocoa, coffee, palm oil, and rice farming, as well as on a regional trading role along the main road to Kailahun. The town has a garrison hospital, several schools, a busy market, and pirogue landings on the Moa River. Daru is also a launch point for visits to the nearby Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary, famous for its primates and birds.
