Panguma is a small town in Kenema District in Sierra Leone's Eastern Province, set in the fertile lowlands between Kenema and Tongo. The town served as an important administrative post and market for the Lower Bambara chiefdom during the British colonial period and retained this role after independence. Panguma is one of the few Mende settlements in which both Protestant and Catholic missions established permanent schools, churches, and clinics during the 20th century. Its economy is based on cocoa, coffee, and rice production, as well as palm-oil processing; many residents also work as artisanal miners in the nearby Tongo diamond fields. During the civil war, Panguma's position between Tongo and Kenema made it the scene of repeated fighting and displacement, but today the town is once again a busy regional market, well connected by an unpaved road through Tongo to Kenema and across lowland bridges towards Pujehun District.
