Bunumbu is a small town in Kailahun District in Sierra Leone's Eastern Province, set in the hilly, rain-soaked Kissi-Mende borderland between Segbwema and Pendembu. During the 20th century, Bunumbu became known above all for Bunumbu Teachers College, founded in the 1930s by the United Brethren in Christ and the Methodist mission and developed in the post-war decades into one of the most important teacher-training centers in eastern Sierra Leone. Generations of rural primary-school teachers were trained here, and the campus, with its housing, workshops, and model farms, shaped the look of the town. The college was heavily damaged during the civil war but rebuilt step by step after 2002 and now operates as the Bunumbu campus of Eastern Polytechnic. The town itself lives off cocoa, coffee, and rice farming, the trade in palm oil and kola, and brisk cross-border traffic to Liberia and Guinea. It has several secondary schools, a clinic, churches, and mosques.
