Kailahun is the headquarters of its eponymous district in the Eastern Province and lies in the far east of Sierra Leone near the borders with Guinea and Liberia. The town is surrounded by hilly Mende country and one of the highest rainfall belts in the country, making the area a major growing region for cocoa, coffee, palm oil, and rice. During the 1991-2002 civil war, Kailahun was a central stage: for years the town served as a stronghold and command base of the Revolutionary United Front, which led to severe destruction of infrastructure. After the war, reconstruction began slowly with support from UN programs, NGOs, and church organizations. Today Kailahun is an administrative and market center with a district administration, a hospital, several secondary schools, and cooperatives marketing cocoa and coffee to organic and fair-trade markets in Europe and North America. The town is also central to cross-border trade in the Mano River area.
