Segbwema is a small town in Kailahun District in Sierra Leone's Eastern Province, lying about 60 kilometers north-east of Kenema along the road between Daru and Kailahun. Founded in the early colonial era, it quickly grew into a regional trading post for coffee, cocoa, palm oil, and rice from the surrounding Mende villages. Segbwema became especially well known for the Nixon Memorial Hospital, established in 1939 and originally run by the Methodist Church mission, which served for decades as one of the most important hospitals in the eastern hinterland and played a role in Lassa fever research. During the civil war, Segbwema was repeatedly contested and heavily damaged, but the hospital was rebuilt after the war with international support. Today, Segbwema is an important stop along the road to Kailahun and a center for cocoa-based farming and for trade in timber from the nearby forests.
