Perseverance I is a newly built district on the reclaimed Île Persévérance, an ambitious state project intended to resolve the acute housing shortage on Mahé. Reclamation began in 2008 with the support of Dutch and Chinese construction firms. Today the district contains hundreds of modern row houses and apartment blocks, a health clinic, a primary school, and a large park. The right-angled street grid and uniform architectural lines clearly distinguish Perseverance I from Victoria's organically grown quarters. The island is connected to the mainland by a bridge, and its promenades offer fine views over the harbor and toward the offshore island of Sainte Anne. Most residents came in through the government's housing lottery program, which provides young families with affordable homeownership at the heart of the archipelago's main island.
