Roche Caiman is one of the youngest districts on Mahé and was built almost entirely on reclaimed land. The former mangrove swamp was filled in during the 1980s and 1990s to combat the housing shortage in Victoria. Today the area is defined by modern residential complexes, expansive sports facilities, and several large government projects. At its heart stands the Stade Linité National Stadium, built under the Chinese, Seychellois friendship treaty (technically on the border with Les Mamelles but accessed from Roche Caiman), which hosts the Seychelles national football team's most important matches. Roche Caiman also has a tennis training center, a cricket pitch, and a bird sanctuary where native species such as the Seychelles bulbul can be observed. The district also contains the largest cluster of family housing built under government subsidy programs. Despite its modern construction, Roche Caiman is one of the liveliest suburbs of the capital.
