Foret Noire means "Black Forest" in French and is aptly named for the dense, dark mountain woodlands that stretch across the central part of Mahé. The district lies along the important Sans Souci Road and crosses the inland country between Victoria and Port Glaud. This road is one of the steepest and most winding on the island and passes through special microclimate zones with mist-shrouded trees and endemic plants such as the Jellyfish Tree (Medusagyne oppositifolia), a rare species found only in the Seychelles. Foret Noire is part of Morne Seychellois National Park, the largest protected area on Mahé. Hiking trails such as the Trois Frères Trail or the Tea Plantation Trail start here or cross the area. There are only a few residences, mainly isolated plantation buildings and research stations. During the rainy season numerous small waterfalls form along the road, intensifying the mystical appearance of the black forest.
