Aldabra Atoll is one of the most remote and best-protected places on Earth. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, access is strictly regulated to preserve the fragile ecosystem. The atoll consists of four large coral islands enclosing a vast lagoon. It is famous for the world's largest population of giant tortoises, estimated at over 150,000. Besides the tortoises, Aldabra is home to numerous endemic species, including the Aldabra rail, the last flightless bird in the Indian Ocean. The underwater world is equally impressive, with pristine coral gardens and an incredible density of fish and sharks. There is no permanent human population except for a small research station. Visiting Aldabra is difficult to organize and requires a permit from the Seychelles Islands Foundation. Access is usually by expedition ship. The best times to visit are April to May and October to November, when the sea is calm. Aldabra features an unparalleled experience of pure wilderness as it existed centuries ago. The atoll is a living laboratory for scientists and a dream destination for true explorers. The rugged volcanic landscape and the massive tidal flows in the channels make Aldabra a dramatic and unforgettable destination for those who have the privilege to visit.
