Saint Louis is one of the oldest districts of Victoria, sprawling across a steep hillside that dominates the city center and gives a wide view over the harbor and the offshore islands. The district was named in the nineteenth century, when the Capuchin order established their Catholic mission headquarters here. The Saint Louis Capuchin Chapel remains one of the oldest preserved churches in the capital. The district contains the iconic State House, the official residence of the Seychellois president, as well as several embassies and the Constitutional Court. Characteristic of the area are the narrow winding lanes lined with traditional Creole timber houses bearing cast-iron railings and colorful shutters. Saint Louis is also known for its old stone staircases connecting the city center with the upper residential quarters, and for its fresh produce market. At the highest point stands a historic colonial-era viewing pavilion offering sweeping vistas over the city and ocean.
