Veliki Stolac (Serbia)

Weather…

Veliki Stolac is the highest peak of the Tara mountain range in western Serbia, standing at 1,675 meters above sea level right on the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. The massif is characterized by its spectacular limestone formations and deep canyons carved by the Drina River over geological epochs. Veliki Stolac is world-famous as one of the primary refuges for the Serbian Spruce (Picea omorika), a living fossil that survived the last ice age in these protected habitats. The region's flora includes over 1,000 plant species, making Tara one of the most biodiverse mountains in Europe. Historically, the area was a strategic borderland, home to cultural treasures such as the Rača Monastery. The Tara National Park, established in 1981, encompasses the peak and protects the pristine mixed forests of beech, fir, and spruce covering its slopes. The climate is moderately continental with high precipitation levels, which foster lush vegetation growth. From Veliki Stolac, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Lake Zaovine and the winding path of the Drina River deep in the valley below.
