Old Hydroelectric Plant Užice (Serbia)

Weather…

The Old Hydroelectric Plant in Užice, located on the Đetinja River, is a landmark of industrial history and the first power plant in Serbia built using Nikola Tesla's multi-phase alternating current system. It commenced operations on August 2, 1900, only five years after the famous Niagara Falls power plant, making it one of the oldest of its kind in the world. The initiative for its construction came from local entrepreneurs, while the technical equipment was supplied entirely by the Siemens & Halske company. Designed by architect Aćim Stevović, the building is characterized by its functional stone industrial architecture. Today, the plant serves as a technical museum and part of the National Museum of Užice, with the original machinery still in working condition. It stands as a symbol of Serbia's rapid technological advancement at the turn of the 20th century.
