Radoštica Monastery (Serbia)

Weather…

The Radoštica Monastery, often associated with the Gradac complex, is situated in the Brvenica valley on the slopes of the Golija Mountains. It was founded around 1270 by Queen Helen of Anjou, the consort of King Uroš I. Its architecture is unique for blending Byzantine traditions with distinct Gothic elements, such as pointed arches and buttresses, reflecting the Western background of its royal patron. The main church is dedicated to the Annunciation of the Virgin and is notable for its elegant lines crafted from pale stone. During the 14th century, the monastery flourished as a cultural center before being abandoned and falling into decay following the Ottoman conquest. It wasn't until the 20th century that extensive restoration work was undertaken to return the complex to its original splendor. Today, it serves as an important nunnery, known for its serene atmosphere and well-preserved medieval frescoes that illustrate the transition to a more mature Byzantine style.
