Drvengrad (Küstendorf) (Serbia)

Weather…

Drvengrad, also known as Küstendorf, is a unique conceptual village built by Serbian film director Emir Kusturica on the Mećavnik hill. Originally created as a set for his film 'Life is a Miracle', it has evolved into a celebrated ethno-complex and cultural center. The architecture is based on the traditional timber construction of the Zlatibor region, where houses are built entirely of dark wood on stone bases. The village layout features streets named after the director's personal heroes, including Nikola Tesla, Diego Maradona, Federico Fellini, and Bruce Lee. At its center stands a beautiful wooden church dedicated to St. Sava, built in the traditional Russian style. Every January, Drvengrad hosts the prestigious Kustendorf Film and Music Festival, which focuses on auteur cinema and attracts global stars without the usual Hollywood glitz. Guests can stay in the wooden cabins, which offer luxury amenities inside a rustic exterior. The local eateries serve organic food produced in the surrounding mountain villages, including homemade jams and honey. Open year-round, Drvengrad features a surreal blend of tradition and art, especially scenic during the winter months when it is blanketed in snow.
