Great War Island (Veliko ratno ostrvo) is situated at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers in Belgrade, forming a distinctive triangular landmass of about 211 hectares. Created by river sediment deposits, the island's name originates from its historical strategic importance during numerous sieges of the Belgrade Fortress. Today, it is an uninhabited nature reserve and a vital ecological sanctuary for over 190 bird species, including the rare white-tailed eagle. The island's landscape is dominated by dense alluvial forests of willow and poplar, which are vital for maintaining the local microclimate and water quality. Its northern tip hosts the Lido beach, providing a seasonal recreational area for the city's inhabitants. Recognized as a natural asset of exceptional importance, the island serves as a crucial corridor for migratory birds and a key green lung for the Serbian capital.

Best season
Spring and autumn are the main migration seasons for numerous bird species on Great War Island. Summer also has excellent observations as many waterbirds breed here.
Best time of day
Dawn and dusk are the most active periods for the island's birdlife. Early morning gives the best opportunities to detect flight movements and calls.
Etiquette
Access the island only on marked paths to avoid disturbing nesting areas. Collecting eggs or feeding birds is, of course, prohibited.
What to bring
A good pair of binoculars and a camera with a telephoto lens are very useful for birdwatching. Waterproof shoes are recommended as the shoreline areas are often damp.
Getting there
The island is accessible by small boats, typically departing from the Belgrade riverfront. You can also get good views of the bird colonies from the riverbanks.
