Rospi Ćuprija Wetlands (Serbia)

Weather…

Rospi Ćuprija is a geographically and historically significant locality in Belgrade's Palilula municipality, situated along the right bank of the Danube. Its name dates back to the Ottoman period, referring to a bridge that once stood over a local stream. Archaeological evidence reveals that the site was settled as early as the Iron Age by the Scordisci, a Celtic tribe, making it one of the oldest inhabited parts of the Belgrade area. In contemporary times, the area is noted for its ecological importance as part of the Danube's riparian zone, serving as a corridor for various migratory bird species. Despite significant industrialization and urban expansion, the remaining wetlands provide critical habitats for waterfowl and marsh vegetation. Ongoing environmental initiatives focus on preserving these natural pockets and integrating the area's rich archaeological heritage into the modern urban landscape of the Serbian capital.
