The Smederevo City Library, officially known as the Public Library Smederevo, is one of the oldest and most significant cultural institutions in Central Serbia. Its origins date back to 1846 with the establishment of the 'Serbian Reading Room' (Srpsko čitalište), aimed at promoting literacy and national culture. The library is housed in an architecturally notable building in the city center, blending classical elements with modern functionality. Today, it holds a collection of over 100,000 items, including rare manuscripts, early printed books, and a comprehensive local history section dedicated to Smederevo. Beyond its role as a book repository, it functions as a lively cultural hub hosting literary evenings, exhibitions, and educational programs. The library continues to be a vital center for research and community engagement, preserving the literary heritage of the Danube region.
