Carska Bara Reserve (Serbia)

Weather…

The Carska Bara Special Nature Reserve is located in the Banat region of northern Serbia, near the confluence of the Begej and Tisa rivers. Officially established in 1986, the reserve covers an area of approximately 1,672 hectares of wetlands, lakes, and marshes. It is internationally recognized as a Ramsar site due to its vital role in preserving the biodiversity of the Pannonian Plain. The reserve is most famous for its bird population, with over 250 recorded species, including all eight species of herons found in Europe. The habitat consists of a complex mosaic of reed beds, willow groves, and open water, providing sanctuary for mammals like wild boars and roe deer. Its name, which translates to "Imperial Marsh," reflects its historical status as a preferred hunting ground for Austro-Hungarian royalty, though today it serves exclusively as a site for conservation and ecological research.
