Pirot is located in southeastern Serbia on the banks of the Nišava River, tucked away at the foothills of the Balkan Mountains (Stara Planina). The city features a lengthy history dating back to Roman times when it was known as Turres, a key station on the ancient Via Militaris. A standout landmark is the 14th-century Momčilov grad medieval fortress, which once guarded the entrance to the Pirot Basin. The city achieved global fame through the Pirot kilim, a hand-woven carpet featuring complex geometric patterns, whose production technique is protected as intangible cultural heritage. Equally renowned is the Pirot cheese (Kačkavalj), crafted according to traditional recipes from the milk of livestock grazing on the surrounding mountain pastures. Today, Pirot is a significant industrial hub, particularly noted for tire manufacturing, but it also increasingly benefits from nature-based tourism in the nearby Stara Planina Nature Park. Its strategic location near the Bulgarian border and along Pan-European Corridor X makes the city an important logistical and economic gateway in the region.
