Belogradchik Rocks (Bulgaria)

Weather…

The Belogradchik Rocks are a striking group of sandstone and conglomerate rock formations located in the western Balkan Mountains near the town of Belogradchik. These geological structures stretch across an area approximately 30 kilometers long and reach heights of up to 200 meters. They originated over 230 million years ago during the Permian period as sediments on an ancient sea floor, which were later elevated by tectonic forces and shaped by erosion. The distinctive reddish hue of the rocks is caused by a high concentration of iron oxides. Located within these formations is the historic Belogradchik Fortress, originally established by the Romans between the 1st and 3rd centuries AD to safeguard strategic trade routes. The site was subsequently expanded by Bulgarian tsars and Ottoman rulers, seamlessly blending man-made walls with the natural stone barriers. The area was officially designated a natural landmark in 1949 and remains on the UNESCO World Heritage tentative list. The varied shapes of the rocks have inspired numerous local legends about petrified figures, animals, and mythical beings.
