Magura Cave Paintings (Bulgaria)

Weather…

The Magura Cave in northwestern Bulgaria contains one of the world's most significant collections of prehistoric cave paintings. These artworks span several millennia, dating from the Epipaleolithic to the Early Bronze Age (approx. 8000 to 1200 BCE). Uniquely, the paintings were created using bat guano as a pigment, providing them with a distinct dark texture and extraordinary longevity. The depictions include hunting scenes, dancing figures, celestial symbols, and various animals such as stags and goats. A standout feature is the solar calendar, which meticulously records 366 days and five major festivals, reflecting sophisticated astronomical knowledge. The cave itself is over 2.5 kilometers long, featuring massive halls with monumental stalactites and stalagmites. Designated as a natural landmark in 1960, it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage tentative list in 1984. The cave's constant temperature is also utilized today for the maturation of sparkling wines in certain sections.
