Babin Zub is a prominent mountain peak and a distinctive rock formation in the Stara Planina (Balkan Mountains) range of eastern Serbia. Standing at an elevation of 1,758 meters, it is both a geographical landmark and the core of a modern ski resort. The name, meaning Grandmother's Tooth, refers to the unique vertical rock pillars that resemble a jagged tooth. Geologically, these formations consist of massive sandstone blocks shaped by millennia of weathering and wind erosion. The area around Babin Zub has been protected as a natural monument since 1980, preserving its rich sub-alpine flora and several endemic Balkan species. The sources of the Trgoviški Timok river are located nearby, making the area hydrologically significant. Development in recent decades has turned Babin Zub into a prime destination for year-round tourism, featuring ski lifts in winter and diverse hiking trails in summer, offering expansive views reaching as far as the Bulgarian border.

Getting there

The extremely high-altitude area is mostly reached by car from nearby towns like Knjaževac via very winding, highly scenic, and sometimes precariously steep rural mountain approach roads.

Summer is absolutely excellent and highly convenient for fully exploring the demanding high-altitude trails on foot, while winter attracts numerous enthusiastic visitors for rapid snow sports on the slopes.

Terrain & paths

Expect very demanding and steep rocky inclines, expansive open alpine meadows, and steep, sometimes loose mountain paths leading directly up towards the visually striking, prominent rocky summit.

What to bring

Suitable, very solid mountain hiking boots, absolutely reliable windproof clothing, and good navigation tools are strongly recommended due to the highly exposed, entirely unprotected high-altitude location.

Vehicles are typically parked quite safely at the nearby ski resort facilities, local hotels, or in very clearly designated trailhead parking areas positioned significantly far below the main peak.

The harsh weather at high altitudes can change extremely rapidly completely without warning; stay well away from unstable rocky edges and strictly ensure you utilize a reliable physical trail map.

The strenuous hike directly to the prominent peak and safely returning usually takes a fulfilling half-day, while properly exploring the broader Stara Planina range heavily consumes a long, full day.
