Midžor is the highest peak of the Stara Planina (Balkan Mountains) in Serbia, standing at an elevation of 2,169 meters. It marks the highest point in Central Serbia and is situated directly on the border between Serbia and Bulgaria. The peak is characterized by its broad, grassy slopes, which contrast with the more rugged rock faces found in other parts of the range. Geologically, Midžor is primarily composed of Paleozoic schists and granite. The surrounding area is part of a significant nature reserve, home to a wide variety of alpine flora and rare fauna, including various eagles and vultures. Hiking to the summit is a popular activity, as the slopes are relatively gentle, yet they reward climbers with panoramic views spanning across the Balkan Peninsula to the Rila and Pirin mountains in Bulgaria. The peak experiences a harsh mountain climate, with snow cover often remaining well into the month of June.

Getting there

The most common approach begins from the Babin Zub ski resort area, which is accessible by winding mountain roads. From this base, well-trodden trails lead directly up towards the summit ridge.

Best season

Summer and early autumn are the safest and most popular times for attempting the summit. Winter ascents are possible but require specialized alpine experience due to harsh snow and strong winds.

The ascent involves long, sustained uphill walking across expansive alpine meadows and rocky ridges. While not highly technical, it requires very good physical endurance to reach the peak.

What to bring

Sturdy hiking boots, trekking poles, and comprehensive windproof layers are absolutely essential. The weather is notoriously unpredictable, so bring extra warm layers, plentiful water, and food.

Ample parking is generally available near the Babin Zub hotel and the main ski center facilities. During the summer hiking season, finding a convenient spot at the trailhead is usually quite easy.
