Batanovtsi is a town located in the Pernik Province of western Bulgaria, situated along the banks of the Struma River and characterized by its industrial heritage. The town gained prominence following the establishment of Bulgaria's first cement factory, 'Granit', in 1913, which defined the regional economy for many decades. During the socialist era, it was renamed Temelkovo in honor of a local partisan leader, but it officially regained its historical name in 1991. Its strategic location between the larger urban centers of Pernik and Radomir makes it an important transport link within the Struma Valley. While the heavy industry has scaled back in recent years, the town maintains a strong community identity and participates in regional folklore traditions. Archaeological findings in the vicinity suggest that the area has been inhabited since antiquity, benefited by the fertile lands and the river. Today, Batanovtsi functions primarily as a residential town for commuters working in Pernik or the capital, Sofia, offering a quieter pace of life.
