Stara Planina Waterfalls (Serbia)

Weather…

The Stara Planina mountain range, also known as the Balkan Mountains, hosts the highest concentration of waterfalls in Serbia, particularly within the Topli Do and Dojkinci river basins. Due to the complex geological structure consisting of limestone and sandstone, combined with steep terrain, these cascades vary significantly in height and flow. Among the most notable is the Pilj waterfall, which drops 64 meters, and the Tupavica waterfall, known for its scenic limestone steps that freeze during winter. Many of these natural monuments were only properly documented in the late 20th and early 21st centuries because of their remote locations in deep canyons. The region's hydrology is influenced by high annual precipitation and snowmelt from peaks exceeding 2,000 meters, such as Midžor. These waterfalls are integral to the ecosystem of the Stara Planina Nature Park, supporting unique bryophyte communities and providing vital moisture to the surrounding ancient beech and spruce forests.
