The Ponišavlje Museum in Pirot is located in the 'House of Mali Rista,' one of the best-preserved examples of Balkan-Oriental architecture, built in 1848. Originally the residence of a wealthy merchant, the building is renowned for its intricate woodcarvings, traditional bay windows, and authentic 19th-century interior design. The museum is globally famous for its collection of Pirot kilims, hand-woven rugs with complex geometric patterns that are listed as part of UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage. Beyond textile art, the museum showcases ethnological exhibits that document the daily life, crafts, and customs of the Ponišavlje region. Its historical authenticity is so well-preserved that it has served as a filming location for several iconic Serbian movies, such as 'Zona Zamfirova.' A visit to the museum provides a deep insight into the transition from Ottoman influence to modern Serbian statehood. The displays are further enriched by archaeological artifacts that prove the region's inhabited history since the Roman period.
