Breznik is a pleasant town in the Pernik Province of western Bulgaria, famed for its long history and unique natural resources. Its most notable feature is the iron-rich mineral water, locally called 'Zhelyazna voda', which springs from the Bardoto hill and has been used for its medicinal properties since ancient times. The town held a strategic position during the Serbo-Bulgarian War of 1885, where the Battle of Breznik played a decisive role in slowing the Serbian advance toward the capital. Culturally, Breznik is home to the Church of Saint Petka, which dates back to the 15th-16th centuries and contains significant medieval frescoes. The area is also a stronghold for the traditional Surva mask festival, where local 'kukeri' perform ancient rituals to ward off evil spirits, making it a lively center of Bulgarian folklore. The surrounding landscape of rolling hills and forests is good for hiking and weekend getaways from the nearby city of Sofia. In recent years, Breznik has seen renewed economic interest through mining developments and the promotion of eco-tourism projects.
