Pico Maria Amélia (São Tomé & Príncipe)

Weather…

Pico Maria Amélia is another prominent peak in the rugged Caué district in the south of São Tomé. It is part of the central volcanic massif and is characterized by its craggy, rocky slopes. The mountain is named after a Portuguese noblewoman, which points to the colonial past. The region around Pico Maria Amélia is extremely humid and is one of the rainiest areas on the island. This promotes a lush, almost impenetrable vegetation. The forests here are primary rainforest, home to many rare plants, birds, and insects. The mountain is an important component of the Obô National Park ecosystem and contributes significantly to the water supply of the southern coastal regions, including the nearby settlement of São João dos Angolares.
