Presidential Palace
The Presidential Palace, often referred to as Palácio Cor-de-Rosa (the Pink Palace), dominates the city center of São Tomé. Originally built in the 19th century as a residence for the Portuguese governor, its architecture is a prime example of the neoclassical colonial style. The building now serves as the official residence and workplace of the President of São Tomé and Príncipe. Although the interior is not accessible to the public, its distinctive facade and surrounding gardens are a popular photo subject. The palace is located on Praça da Independência, the historical and political heart of the city, opposite the cathedral and near other important government buildings. Its history is closely intertwined with that of the country, from the colonial period through the struggle for independence to the modern republic.
