Cathedral of Saint Thomas (São Tomé & Príncipe)

Weather…

The Cathedral of São Tomé, officially Sé Catedral de Nossa Senhora da Graça, is the oldest cathedral in Sub-Saharan Africa. Its origins trace back to a late 15th-century chapel, built by order of King John II of Portugal. The current building largely dates from the 16th century, though it has been rebuilt and restored multiple times over the centuries, notably after pirate attacks in the 17th century and a fire in the 19th century. Its architecture is a blend of Gothic, Manueline, and Baroque styles, reflecting its different construction phases. Inside, it houses the tombs of several Portuguese bishops and governors. As the center of the Catholic faith on the islands, the cathedral played a crucial role in the social and spiritual life of the colony and remains a significant religious and historical landmark for the nation.
