Roça Vista Alegre (São Tomé & Príncipe)

Weather…

Roça Vista Alegre (Beautiful View) lives up to its name, often situated on a vantage point with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Founded in the 19th century, it was a medium-sized plantation dedicated to cocoa cultivation. Its history is a microcosm of the colonial plantation economy: European owners managing from afar, a local administrator directing production, and hundreds of African contract laborers performing the hard work. The Roça's architecture, with the main house in a prominent location and the workers' barracks far below, reflects the social divide of the time. After independence from Portugal in 1975, the plantation could no longer be operated profitably and was abandoned. Today, the buildings are dilapidated and being reclaimed by nature. However, the 'beautiful view' remains, offering a melancholic contrast to the ruins that tell a story of wealth, inequality, and eventual decline.
