Pantufo is a traditional fishing village on the coast of the Água Grande district, only a few kilometers south of central São Tomé. Wedged between a small sheltered bay and steep, densely vegetated hillsides, the village has lived for centuries to the rhythm of the Atlantic. Colorful hand-built wooden canoes known locally as cancos line the black volcanic sand, and fishermen head out in the early morning hours to catch tuna, wahoo and flying fish that later supply the capital's fish market. Pantufo is renowned beyond the island for its excellent beachside seafood restaurants, where the day's catch is served straight from the boats with lime, garlic and the typical molho cru sauce. Traditional boat-building workshops are still active here, offering a glimpse into a craft that has changed little since colonial times. Visiting Pantufo means experiencing authentic island life far from the bustle of tourism and discovering a community in which family ties, the sea and religious devotion are closely interwoven.
