Quinta da Favorita is a historically grown residential and garden district in the northern part of the capital São Tomé and is regarded as one of the greenest addresses on the island. The name refers to the former Quinta da Favorita plantation, which in the nineteenth century produced exotic fruits such as mango, avocado, sapodilla and lychee for the Portuguese elite. From the core of the former estate, well-tended gardens, shaded avenues and stately colonial villas have been preserved, today partly inhabited by diplomats, academics and well-off families. Architecturally, hipped roofs, wide verandas and delicate wrought-iron grilles characterize the streetscape, while bougainvillea, frangipani and flame trees burst into bloom. Birdwatchers can spot endemic species such as the São Tomé bronze-naped pigeon and the São Tomé thrush among the old trees. Despite its proximity to the busy city center, Quinta da Favorita feels like a botanical retreat, where colonial heritage, nature-close living and tropical abundance create a distinctive atmosphere of permanence.
