King's Palace Nyanza (Rwanda)

Weather…

The King's Palace in Nyanza is an impressive reconstruction of the traditional royal residence. The thatched, dome-shaped building is a magnificent example of traditional Rwandan architecture and craftsmanship. It served as the court for King Mutara III Rudahigwa. Visitors can explore the interior, which consists of several rooms with specific functions, and learn about the royal rituals and the lifestyle of the monarchy. Behind the palace is the enclosure for the 'Inyambo', the sacred royal cows with their impressive, long horns. These cows played an important role in the court's ceremonies. Nearby is also the modern residence that was built for the king before he died in mysterious circumstances in 1959, providing a contrast between traditional and colonial architectural styles.
