Ntarama Genocide Memorial (Rwanda)

Weather…

The Ntarama Memorial is located in a former Catholic church, about 30 kilometers south of Kigali. Around 5,000 Tutsi sought refuge here in April 1994, as churches were previously considered safe havens. The attackers broke through the walls and massacred almost everyone inside. The church has been left largely untouched to serve as a haunting reminder. The personal belongings of the victims, clothing, bibles, rosaries, are still scattered on the pews. The bloodstains on the walls and the bullet holes in the ceiling bear witness to the violence. Part of the building has been turned into an ossuary, where the skulls and bones of the victims are lined up on shelves. Ntarama is a profoundly moving site that demonstrates the vulnerability of those who sought sanctuary in holy places.
