Béni Abbès, known as the 'White Oasis' or the 'Pearl of the Saoura', is picturesquely situated on the banks of the Oued Saoura in western Algeria. The city is overlooked by a monumental sand dune of the Great Western Erg, considered one of the highest drivable dunes in the world. Historically, the site is closely linked to the work of Charles de Foucauld, who built his hermitage here in 1901, which now serves as a museum and spiritual retreat. Béni Abbès also hosts a renowned Saharan research center, founded in 1942, dedicated to studying the desert's flora, fauna, and geology. The city's architecture is characterized by the contrast between the old, fortified Ksar and more modern administrative buildings. Every year, the city celebrates the 'Maoulid' festival with traditional dances and camel races, making it a significant cultural destination. The surrounding palm groves are irrigated by springs originating from the limestone rocks of the plateau.
