Kiziguro

Kiziguro is a sector and commercial center in the Gatsibo district of Rwanda's Eastern Province. It is located in the country's dry savannah region, traditionally characterized by livestock farming. Kiziguro is tragically known as the site of one of the worst massacres during the 1994 genocide. Thousands of Tutsi were murdered in the local church and other places. A memorial in Kiziguro commemorates the victims. Today, Kiziguro is a growing commercial center that serves the surrounding rural communities. The economy is based on livestock farming, especially the keeping of Ankole cattle, and the cultivation of drought-resistant crops such as maize and beans. The town has a large market and a hospital, which plays an important role in the region's healthcare.
