The town is located in the immediate vicinity of the Rusumo border crossing, making it an important strategic point for trade along the central corridor connecting Rwanda to the port of Dar es Salaam. Kirehe's economy is heavily dependent on agriculture, especially the cultivation of bananas, maize, and beans. The region benefits from its proximity to the Akagera River, which forms the border with Tanzania. In Rusumo, near Kirehe, a large regional hydroelectric power plant has been built to supply electricity to Rwanda, Tanzania, and Burundi. Kirehe town itself is growing rapidly and developing into an important commercial and service center for the surrounding rural population.
