Buy whole fruits from roadside vendors at the town entrance for the freshest and sweetest experience.
With the river nearby, many local eateries serve freshly caught and charcoal-grilled fish.
In this region, plantains are often served steamed and mashed, reflecting the culinary influence from across the border.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
The central market is the best place to buy pineapples and other tropical fruits in bulk.
Look for colorful Kitenge fabrics which are often brought in through the nearby border.
Slightly outside the town, you can find quiet spots by the river, great for bird watching.
Hike up the nearby hills for an expansive view over the plains stretching toward Tanzania.

Kirehe is a town and the capital of the district of the same name in the far southeast of Rwanda, on the border with Tanzania. The town is located in the immediate vicinity of the Rusumo border crossing, making it an important strategic point for trade along the central corridor connecting Rwanda to the port of Dar es Salaam. Kirehe's economy is heavily dependent on agriculture, especially the cultivation of bananas, maize, and beans. The region benefits from its proximity to the Akagera River, which forms the border with Tanzania. In Rusumo, near Kirehe, a large regional hydroelectric power plant has been built to supply electricity to Rwanda, Tanzania, and Burundi. Kirehe town itself is growing rapidly and developing into an important commercial and service center for the surrounding rural population.
