Gatuna is a small but strategically extremely important town in the Northern Province of Rwanda, right on the border with Uganda. It is the site of the most important and busiest border crossing between the two countries and a crucial point for trade along the Northern Corridor, which connects Rwanda to the Kenyan port of Mombasa. A large part of Rwanda's imports and exports are handled via Gatuna. The town itself is small and consists mainly of shops, warehouses, restaurants, and accommodation that cater to the needs of truck drivers and traders. In 2019, a modern 'One-Stop Border Post' was opened here to speed up customs and immigration procedures and facilitate trade. Life in Gatuna is strongly influenced by the rhythm of border traffic.
