Voronezh Nature Reserve (Russia)

Weather…

The Voronezh Nature Reserve, officially established in 1923, is set within the Russian forest-steppe zone and holds monumental historical significance for European wildlife conservation. By the early 1920s, the Eurasian beaver had been hunted to near total extinction across the entire continent. This specific sanctuary was created to protect the very last surviving beavers in the Usmanka and Voronezh river basins. By establishing a dedicated experimental beaver breeding center, scientists not only saved the species from oblivion but successfully bred and relocated thousands of beavers to river systems throughout Europe and Asia. Today, the reserve's dense pine and oak forests also provide a secure habitat for wild boar, roe deer, and the incredibly rare Russian desman. As a recognized UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Voronezh stands as an enduring and brilliant example of how targeted scientific intervention and captive breeding can successfully pull a keystone species back from the brink of total annihilation.
