Volga Source (Volgoverkhovye)
Volgoverkhovye is the site of the source of the Volga, the longest river in Europe and a symbol of Russia itself. Located in the Valdai Hills of the Tver Oblast, the source is remarkably humble. Here, the mighty river begins as a small spring bubbling from a marshy forest. A scenic wooden chapel is built directly over the source, and a small bridge allows visitors to stand with one foot on each bank of the 'Mother of Rivers.' Beside the spring stands the Olga Convent, featuring a grand red-brick cathedral that looks strikingly out of place in such a remote, rural setting. A stone monument marks the source, and nearby is the very first dam on the Volga's long journey to the Caspian Sea. The site is a place of national pride and spiritual reflection, offering a quiet, meditative atmosphere surrounded by pristine Russian nature. The best time to visit is during the summer months or early autumn, as the final stretch of the road is unpaved and can be difficult during wet seasons. In winter, the site is covered in thick snow, offering a beautiful but challenging experience. Most travelers reach the source by taking a day trip from the town of Ostashkov. Visiting Volgoverkhovye is as much a spiritual pilgrimage as it is a geographical discovery.
