Port of Murmansk (Russia)

Weather…

The Port of Murmansk is a logistical phenomenon and of absolutely critical importance to Russia's Arctic economic strategy. Located deep in the far north on the Kola Peninsula, Murmansk is the largest port in the world north of the Arctic Circle. Its decisive geographic advantage is the fact that, thanks to the warm currents of the North Atlantic Drift (Gulf Stream), it remains completely ice-free year-round, which is extremely unusual for ports at these latitudes. The port serves as the main western starting point for the Northern Sea Route (NSR) and is a central transshipment hub for Siberian coal, nickel, apatite, and mineral fertilizers destined for global markets. Furthermore, Murmansk hosts the base for the nuclear-powered icebreaker fleet, which is indispensable for keeping the Arctic shipping lanes open during the winter. With massive new coal and cargo terminals on the western shore of the Kola Bay, Russia continues to steadily expand the capacities of this strategic Arctic gateway.
