Kirov, located deep in the majestic forests of eastern European Russia on the banks of the Vyatka River, is a city with an archaic soul and a deeply rooted craft tradition. Originally known as Vyatka (and earlier Khlynov), the city was founded in 1181 and, due to its centuries-long isolation from major trade routes, preserved its very own, untouched culture. The region gained worldwide fame through the Dymkovo toys, colorful, hand-painted clay figures that have been passed down from generation to generation for centuries and form the colorful centerpiece of local folk art. Today, the center, renamed after the Soviet politician Sergei Kirov in 1934, is not only a guardian of traditional Russian folklore but also an important industrial site, relying on mechanical engineering, forestry, and biochemistry.
