Murmansk is the largest city in the world located north of the Arctic Circle, situated on the rocky eastern coast of the Kola Bay on the Barents Sea. Founded in 1916 during World War I as Romanov-on-Murman, it was established to provide an ice-free port for receiving military supplies from Allied forces. Due to the influence of the warm North Atlantic Current, the harbor remains ice-free year-round, granting it immense strategic and economic significance for Russia. During World War II, the city played a crucial role as the primary destination for Arctic convoys and was later designated a Hero City for its resilient defense against invading forces. Modern Murmansk is a central hub for the fishing industry and shipbuilding, and it serves as the home port for the world's only fleet of nuclear-powered icebreakers. The cityscape is defined by its terraced slopes and monumental landmarks, such as the Alyosha Monument, which overlooks the bay as a tribute to the defenders of the Soviet Arctic.
