Kizhi Pogost (Russia)

Weather…

The Kizhi Pogost, picturesquely situated on a narrow island in northern Russia's Lake Onega, is the undisputed masterpiece of traditional Russian wooden architecture. At the center of this remote open-air museum stands the panoramic Church of the Transfiguration, dating from 1714. According to popular legend, this 37-meter-high architectural marvel was built by the master carpenter Nestor using only a single axe and entirely without the use of iron nails; he subsequently threw his axe into the lake so that no one could ever build anything like it again. The church is crowned by 22 artfully staggered onion domes made of aspen shingles, which shine like silver in the sunlight. Right next to it is the smaller, nine-domed Church of the Intercession (winter church) and an octagonal wooden bell tower from the 19th century. The ensemble has survived centuries of the harsh northern climate and fascinates visitors today as a masterful testament to craftsmanship perfection.
