The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Petrozavodsk is the primary spiritual landmark of Karelia and an outstanding example of Russian Neoclassical architecture. Built between 1826 and 1832 according to the designs of architect Alexander Postnikov, the cathedral was notably funded through contributions from the workers of the local Alexander ironworks. The structure is defined by its clean lines, harmonious proportions, and five domes, characteristic of the early 19th-century Imperial style. Dedicated to Saint Alexander Nevsky, the warrior-prince and patron saint of Russia, it quickly became the city's religious hub. During the Soviet era, the cathedral was secularized and used as a regional museum, leading to the loss of much of its original interior artistry. Following a thorough restoration in the 1990s, it was reconsecrated and regained its status as the head church of the Karelian diocese. Today, it remains a central cultural and religious site near the shores of Lake Onega.
